Wild animals rescued from informal settlement
The Black Sparrowhawk was kept in a small cage.
Two wild animals were rescued this week by the Roodepoort Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Matholiesville.
A Black Sparrowhawk and a tortoise were rescued. The bird of prey had been trapped and captured in the informal settlement. The bird was confined in a small budgie cage, with a broken leg. The condition of the bird’s feathers indicated that it had been confined to the small cage for some time.

The tortoise was removed from the wild and taken to a school and painted red for the children’s ‘amusement’.
“Why would someone capture this majestic bird? Think of the fear and pain this bird was submitted to. And as far as the tortoise is concerned, what are we teaching our children?
No wonder our wild life is diminishing,” said a dismayed SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach.
“Wild animals belong in the wild,” she said sternly.
