So next time, consider adding turmeric to more than just food.
Curry, flavour and colour are the first to come to mind when thinking about turmeric. Besides being a delight in food it also comes with a number of health benefits.
According to HealthBeckon the spice has been used for centuries all across India, China and Indonesia for its medicinal properties. Associate nutritionist Jo Lewin claims that the reason turmeric has so many benefits is its yellow colour.
1. Known as a powerful anti-inflammatory, turmeric can fight bacteria in the body by drinking 150ml of water with a teaspoon of the spice. This can be increased.
2. Doctors are looking into the use of turmeric for preventing heart disease. According to Kris Gunnars, the ingredient that gives turmeric its colour, curcumin, is beneficial to the body in the same way as exercise and with the antioxidant properties it contains, both factor in to reduce the risk of heart disease.
3. Upset stomachs are never fun and can be a pain to treat. Turmeric can be used as a natural remedy to calm the stomach. Research by the University of Maryland Medical Centre found that this is due to the spice stimulating the gallbladder to produce bile and increase digestion.
4. Countless Instagram beauty gurus and YouTubers make various face masks using the spice. They add other natural ingredients to promote skin radiance and treat skin problems such as dryness or acne scaring. According to Healthy and Natural World a mixture of turmeric, honey and plain yogurt can be used to create such a face mask.
5. Not only does it make for radiant skin, turmeric is also used to reduce dandruff and reduce oil on the scalp. It can be used on the hair the same way it is used in the face mask. A Debnath who writes for Fashion Lady says using fresh, crushed turmeric mixed with olive oil is a sure way to reduce dandruff and moisturise the scalp.
