Court asked to imprison Brickz for a minimum of 10 years

Brickz is expected to appear again on 17 October for sentencing.

The sentencing of rape-accused Kwaito star Sipho Brickz Ndlovu was postponed on Thursday, 28 September.

The court delayed the sentencing after hearing arguments from both the State and Defence during the pre-sentencing precedings in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court.

The Sweety my Baby hit-maker is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl, known to be his niece, in 2013. The star was found guilty in July.

Although Brickz’ defence appealed for a lenient sentence, namely up to eight years of imprisonment, the State disputed the plea, stating that there are no substantial reasons why the court should not hand down a sentence of of 10 years’ imprisonment.

Piet du Plessis, Brickz’ attorney, told the court that his client is already serving his punishment for disappointing his fans and destroying his musical career.

He also asked the court to approach the sentencing with caution and reminded the court that the victim was assisted to get over the incident and within six months everything was back to normal.

However, State Prosecutor, Pratisha Salie, told the court that a minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment is a starting point and is generally appropriate.

Salie added that there was nothing in Brickz’ background that might have caused him to act as he did, and that the victim viewed the accused as a father figure.

She stated that Brickz was deemed to be a celebrity and would most likely be able to continue with his life after serving his sentence, be a role model and send the right message to South Africans who looked up to him.

Salie concluded by asking the court, “What type of message will we [the court] be sending to the public, to women and children, if Brickz receives a light sentence?”

Brickz is expected to appear again on 17 October for sentencing.
