What to do in a power outage
Here's how to keep yourself occupied during a power outage.
It is Saturday night and the power is out, whether it is a planned or unplanned power outage, and there is still nothing to do … or is there?
If a planned power outage is on the cards, make plans in advance to travel outside of the affected areas and watch a movie, go tenpin bowling or even party it up in a nightclub.
However, we can be caught unawares and the power may go out unexpectedly, due to cable theft or any number of faults.
Here are five things you can do at home during a power outage:
- Pull out a board game or a deck of cards. You can always create some light with candles, solar lamps and other lanterns. If you play a board game like Monopoly, the game will most definitely last until the power comes back on.
- Star gaze. This is the perfect time to look to the heavens and maybe even learn more about the stars. There are clever apps you can download in case of an outage that are able to tell you more about the constellations.
- Read a book. Reading by candlelight does not do permanent damage to your eyes.
- Play Spotlight Charades. Use a flashlight to create shadow puppets or use it as a prop to act out your favourite TV show or book while others try to guess what it is you are acting out.
- Have a braai. Have a delicious supper and even roast marshmallows over the fire while listening to the sounds of the night.
