Coach with passion for the pool
This team has a secret weapon in the pools
Swimming at Maragon Private Schools has gone from strength to strength. This is because the school has brought in coach Fernando Nhaca to train their junior and level 1 swimmers. He has been a coach for four years after finishing his matric.
“I was a swimmer before and decided to be a coach so I can impart some of what I have learned during my time in the pool.
Seeing the children doing things in the pool that I could not do at their age is one of the reasons I love to coach. It is also because I can help improve their swimming techniques as it is a difficult sport,” he said.

Fernando has plenty to share with those he coaches and has extra motivation to lead his swimmers to heights that he himself never reached.
“I started swimming when I was eight years old. Even during school holidays, all I did was train to be a better swimmer. After the age of 12, I started participating in competitions and represented Gauteng a few times. Although I never made it into the South African team, I’ve always been close. I spent my whole life swimming, so it is not something I can just let go. I enjoy watching swimming and being a coach. I still enjoy being in the pool and swimming as well,” he said.
Fernando added that in swimming, dedication and commitment are needed to become a success.
