National Cheeseburger Day
Add some cheese to your burgers on #NationalCheeseburgerDay
18 September is National Cheeseburger Day, the day on which the world’s favourite sandwich is honoured – with an added slice of cheese.
Dating back to the 1920s, many theories exist on the beginning of the cheeseburger. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working in his father’s sandwich shop when he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger in an experiment.
But, there are other claims on the invention of the cheeseburger as well, including:
– The menu at a Los Angeles Restaurant, O’Dells, listed a cheeseburger smothered with chilli for 25 cents on their menu in 1928.
– Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims they invented the cheeseburger in 1934.
– A trademark for the name “cheeseburger” was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive In in 1935.
– According to archives, an application for a trademark on the word “cheeseburger” was made in the 1930s by Gus Belt, founder of the Steak ‘n Shake.
Celebrate today by gathering your friends and family and grill some burgers – but don’t forget the cheese! You can also add some other ingredients to your cheeseburgers for a yummy variation, like bacon, mushrooms, caramelised onions and many more!
