Domestic workers assist in fighting crime
Domestic workers and gardeners are the eyes and ears of the community, Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann said.
Let’s Be Wise, a domestic workers forum in Little Falls has put its foot down to try and reduce crime in the suburb.
On 17 September, the forum which comprises domestic workers and gardeners, rallied with local law-enforcement agencies and Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann to raise awareness about the scourge of crime in the area.

The forum members, clad in their green T-shirts, marched with confidence while holding up their placards with warnings and appeals to the general public. The walk started at the Engen service station on Cascades Road to Brenda Ruvando’s cross at the Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection.
The forum’s poster child, Miriam Seleke, said they started the forum a year ago along with other domestic workers in the area. “Last year we started Let’s Be Wise as six members, but we have already been holding meeting four years ago to discuss crime and other proactive initiatives to have our voices heard,” she said.
They have partnered with the police, security companies and the Little Falls and Strubens Valley Residential Community (Lifco), and they vowed to report any wrongdoing in the community.Mann commended the forum for organising the march. “I fully support what they are doing. I’m going to partner all the domestic workers and gardeners with the local residents association so that they can start combating crime in the area,” he said.

Mann reminded the forum that they are the eyes and ears of the whole community, because they see and hear a lot more than anyone else does.He added that it was important for them to partner with the relevant people so they can report crime to the benefit of everyone in the community.
Captain Bhekani Gumede from Honeydew Police Station also urged the workers to report crime and make use of their panic buttons. He said there is no such thing as a small crime and if they suspect something out of the ordinary, they must contact the local police station. He also encouraged residents to attend forum meetings to be aware of the crime patterns in the community. Mann thanked Checkers for donating flowers and Spar Strubens Valley for providing refreshments.
