National Apple Dumpling Day

Revisit the smells of your childhood and celebrate #NationalAppleDumplingDay

17 September is National Apple Dumpling Day, a day created to celebrate a dish that originated in the colder European climates of England, Bavaria and Austria.

Apple Dumpling was seen as a humble peasant dish but has crossed the Atlantic to spread its sweet smell to the New World, and become an internationally loved treat.

This delicious treat has gained popularity over the centuries, and can be found in many grandmother’s cookbooks, making it worthy of having its own day of celebration.

Apple dumplings are delicious filled pastries, typically made by putting peeled and cored apples on a piece of dough that is sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, folded over to form a dumpling and oven baked until it is tender. It is believed to be a native dish from the northeastern United States especially around Pennsylvania.

Apple dumplings are often found in Amish recipe-books and are frequently eaten for breakfast but they can also be enjoyed as a dessert, as they are sometimes served with ice-cream.

Celebrate by going back to your childhood and serve this rustic treat with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or drenched with decadent caramel sauce. You can also enjoy some delicious apple dumplings while you are watching the 1975 Walt Disney movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang.

Find a yummy recipe to make some apple dumplings with a difference and enjoy them for breakfast, a snack or dessert!
