SANBS needs you to make a difference
National levels, as well as blood levels in Johannesburg are well below the 'safe supply' point.
The South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) current supply of blood and blood products is critically low.
As of 12 September (the levels change daily) they had enough blood to supply Johannesburg for 2,2 days. The national supply level was at 1,8 days, and platelet levels were at 0,7 days. SANBS public relations practitioner, Lebo Seatholo, explained that it’s safest to have 5 days’ stock.

SANBS plans to have several blood drives in and around Roodepoort this month, including the following:
- Cradlestone Mall –15 and 20 September outside the Mugg and Bean Court from 10am to 4pm
- Silverstar Casino – 29 September from 9am to 3pm
- Monument Toyota Constantia Kloof – 19 September from 9:30am to 11:30am
- Standard Bank Constantia Kloof – 22 September from 10am to 3pm
- Westgate – a permanent Donor Centre opposite Dischem. Operating hours: Monday: 1pm to 4.30pm; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 8:30am to 4.30pm; Wednesday: 8:30am to 6pm and Saturday: 8:30am to 3pm.
- Monument Toyota Wilropark – 19 September from 1pm to 3.30pm
Requirements for donation are:
- Weigh at least 50kg
- Between ages of 16 and 65
- Healthy
- Lead a sexually safe lifestyle
- Consider your blood safe for transfusion
