Shack infestation in Welties

Shacks continue to be erected in the area.

Residents of Weltevreden Park have awoken to another shack dwelling, believed to have been erected some time last week.

The illegal shacks, erected between Rooitou Avenue and Cornelius Street, have angered nearby residents who now fear a security risk.

The Community Policing Forum (CPF) public relations officer Jon Rosenberg admitted that he was aware of the problem and is expecting Johannesburg Metro Police to address it.

He said that he was informed a week ago about the problem by one of the CPF volunteers who lives in a nearby Complex.

“Nothing has been done yet. [But] I’ve spoken with JMPD to deal with this problem,” he said.

Rosenberg added that they have another similar problem near Palm Court Shopping Centre, where a number of men use a tree as a place of shelter.

A site visit was conducted on Rooitou Avenue by EC Security’s reaction manager, Norman Mphilo. He found two men occupying the shacks, but could not identify any suspected stolen items.

“There were no suspicious goods there. I only found food, clothes and water,” he said.
