A wish to cycle the Wilro Challenge

Out to prove that anything is possible even if you're blind

Visually impaired cyclist, Jessica Grib, is looking for a partner to cycle with her at the annual Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge. The 36-year-old has already started training for the 5 November competition at the Aspire Strength and Conditioning Gym, with the help of Jacques Peche and Charmaine Michael.

Jessica needs a tandem bicycle and a pilot, that is, someone who will take the lead seat as they cycle the race.

“I want to do my bit as a member of the Wilro Lions, and to show people that disabled women can do just as much as everyone else. I also want to take part in the competition because the outdoors and open air are attracting me. I’ve always wanted to be part of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. I am a fitness fanatic and I love to run and cycle,” said Jessica.

Keeping fit and active are important to Jessica and besides cycling and playing lawn bowls, she recently took up judo as a sport.

“I don’t want to just train. I want to put my training to the test in different challenges, that is why I want to be part of the cycle challenge. I look forward to having fun outdoors.”

Jessica is at her happiest cycling and she added that she loves to test her endurance and how her training is progressing.

“When I cycle, I get into a zone and I’m in my happy place. If anyone in the community is willing to assist me and become my pilot, I will be really grateful. The pilot and I have to balance each other out. I need someone who can communicate loud and clear with me as I also wear hearing aids. The pilot must also be punctual and be honest with me, not afraid of disabilities, and not treat me like a fragile egg. Put in the effort to understand and take the opportunity to learn more about disabilities,” said Jessica.

For more information or to assist Jessica, SMS her on 082 440 3316.
