National Letter Writing Day
Be old school and write a letter on #NationalLetterWritingDay
1 September is National Letter Writing Day, the perfect opportunity to be reminded of the wonders of the hand-written word.
Once upon a time, communication only happened in a couple of ways – you either sat down with someone and had a conversation or you wrote a letter and had it delivered. A letter was a very intimate way of communication, because each one bore the indelible mark of its creator. The old method of a written letter carried a certain personal level, something digital media just cannot quite achieve.
A mailed letter could include a variety of things, from the subtle scents of your home and perfume to snippings from your garden, and receiving a letter in your mailbox was usually quite exciting for the receiver.
Richard Simpkin is the originator of National Letter Writing Day. He established this day as a tribute to the joy and excitement he experienced when he received a letter in his mailbox. His appreciation for the hand-written word came as a result of his project called Australian Legends, where he wrote letters to people considered to be Australian legends, requesting a personal interview and a photo session. It was an amazing feeling to receive a letter containing the legend’s personal touch.
The fact that a hand-written letter is a collectible item also helps its cause, as digital communication certainly is not.
Celebrate by taking out a pen and paper and start writing – it could be a thank you note, love letter, or maybe a shopping list.
Select an old friend or family member of any age, and send them a written letter. The younger ones will appreciate the excitement of receiving something so alien to them, while a grandparent will cherish receiving this reminder of days gone by.
Take the opportunity this day provides, and work on your writing skills to let a loved one know they are worth the little extra effort.
