The 21-year-old gave his account via email and asked to remain anonymous. “I was travelling from my girlfriend’s house in Mondeor and took the Gordon Road offramp onto Ontdekkers Road. There were allegations on the scene by other motorists who saw the Kombi earlier, that he had taken 14th Avenue past Flora Clinic onto Ontdekkers Road on his way back from Rivonia, and had been driving recklessly on the highway. They also said the driver had skipped about three traffic lights before he got to Ontdekkers Road, but I cannot prove this,” wrote the young man.

“I was behind the Kombi, travelling to Discovery via Ontdekkers Road and I witnessed the Kombi skipping the red traffic light at the intersection with Golf Club Terrace.

As it turned yellow, I started to slow down but he kept on going. It seemed that instead of attempting to slow down, he accelerated more and did not take his foot off the pedal.

“After the moment of impact I stopped and ran to Keanu (one of the twins) and by just looking at him I could tell he had passed on. I checked for a pulse but found nothing. I soon after found the confused driver screaming, ‘He skipped the robot’. Later on I checked on the occupants of the VW Kombi. They were trapped and for the moment unconscious. When they gained consciousness moments later, the passenger pleaded with the paramedics as he was trapped in the vehicle,” he said

“I did learn one thing then – the VW Kombi reeked of alcohol. I believe that the driver of the minibus [Kombi] was responsible for this tragic incident. He skipped the red traffic light and T-boned the Hyundai H1 minivan, killing those young people. It was a scary sight as I’m only 21 myself. I can’t imagine how the families must feel. It was a very traumatising experience and it would be for anyone.
