24 August is National Knife Day, a day to appreciate and recognise all types of knives used on a daily basis, as well as to admire their effectiveness.
Today was created to be a celebration of this marvellous and useful tool that has been used by the human race since the beginning of time.
The evolution of the knife is remarkable – the earliest knives were made from bone, stone and flint, but today’s creations contain titanium, bronze, iron and steel. A knife has always been used as a tool and in the old times, it was used to carve out basic necessities. It was also a vital component to survival.
Today, it means so much more to the fisherman, surgeon, carver or rescue worker, because without it they would not be able to perform their job well. Knives are also used for cooking, eating and hunting.
To realise how indispensable knives are in our lives we just need to think about the handy Swiss Army knife, something that is owned by almost everyone.
There are no validated sources for the origin of National Knife Day, making it an unofficial holiday, yet it is a good time for everyone to learn and appreciate the importance of a knife. Here are some interesting knife facts:
– It is advisable to only use the appropriate knife sharpener intended for the specific knife as using other sharpeners may damage the knife blade.
– Knives are not made out of stainless steel alone – a metal alloy is used. To protect your knife from stains try not to immerse them in highly concentrated salt water.
– Always keep your knife dry to prevent rust.
– Always use a sharp knife as the use of a dull knife needs more force, exposing the user to more danger.
Celebrate today by putting your chopping skills in the kitchen to the test, or buy that knife set you have always wanted. Invite friends or family over for a knife-swapping party or to clean and sharpen your knives. There is nothing better than having cake and enjoying a slice by the knife. And, instead of wishing someone to have a nice day, why not say, “Have a knife day!”
