From Allen’s Nek to Arsenal
Young FC Real player looks to impress at Arsenal Football Club Academy.
Local soccer player, Aidan Wasserman, has been selected to be trained by the Arsenal Football Club Academy.
Academy coaches, Rupen Shah and Moaz Awadelkarim, travelled from the UK to see South Africa’s soccer talent and help with drills and skills training between games during the semi-finals of the Discovery Cup 2017 tournament. At the end of the tournament, they selected the top U/14 player from among the girls and boys who had participated in the semi-finals.

Aidan was the overseas coaches’ choice. He will now have the opportunity to learn and gain great exposure as a player during the training in July 2018.
Aidan currently trains with, and plays for, FC Real, which is based in Allen’s Nek. His coach, Bevan Bowers, said,
“Aidan came to FC Real at the beginning of this season and the moment I saw him I knew there was something special about him. I couldn’t understand how he had not been snapped up by one of the bigger clubs.”

Bevan then started working with him and made a few changes to his game, including changing his position from striker to right wing, where he excelled. He said Aidan has a tremendous hunger and drive to be the best, which makes it easy to work with him. He has no doubt Aidan will go all the way to the top.
Although Aidan has played in an overseas tournament, he has never trained with overseas coaches, and is looking forward to what he can learn. “I will continue to work very hard as this is the opportunity of a lifetime – the exposure will be amazing,” Aidan said.

He dreams that one day he will play for one of the English Premiership teams.
