A ‘Hoop en Bid’ for love and music

Recording artist, Johan Anker, performed and launched his new album in Ruimsig.

Johan Anker launched his first album, Hoop en Bid, at Maragons Ruimsig Private School, where he performed to a crowd of adoring fans.

Johan became a household name due to his participation in the first season of The Voice SA, where he was part of Team Kahn. He said his time on the show was an incredible opportunity and a thrilling learning experience.

“I think it taught me to work under pressure, to know you are only ever as good as your last performance and it gave me an incredible platform,” he added.

He is thankful to the show, as it was the platform on which he was spotted by his label, Universal Music. Johan’s inspiration for this album is hope and love; love for the Lord and love for thy neighbour. “I want to provide people with hope and inspire them – informing them that after their darkest night there still is hope and light at the end of it all. Music to me is about carrying across a message and that is what I hope to achieve with this album,” Johan said.

The Wesrand Lewensentrum, based in the school’s hall, was Johan’s first stop on his church tour, which began on 20 August. He will be visiting multiple churches, spreading the message of love and hope and he plans to perform at multiple festivals in the next two months. The album will be released officially on 25 August.

Johan started singing at the age of nine. He always knew he wanted to sing and would make his career as an artist. He is a trained classical singer, however, he also enjoys contemporary music. Johan combines the two genres in his style called Popera, which is the colloquial term used for Classical Crossover music.

In the future, Johan hopes to perform on big stages such as Gospel Skouspel and be a successful recording artist. One of his biggest dreams has always been to sing the National Anthem at an international Springboks Rugby Game.
