National Senior Citizens Day

Support, honour and show appreciation to our senior citizens on #NationalSeniorCitizensDay

Ronald Reagan once said, “For all they have achieved throughout their life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”

National Senior Citizens Day is celebrated annually on 21 August and was declared in 1988 through a Presidential Proclamation signed by Ronald Reagan.

This day was created to afford us the opportunity to support, honour and show appreciation to our senior citizens as well as to show recognition for their achievements and the contributions they have made to our communities.

Our gratitude can be shown by ensuring our communities are places where older people can participate to the fullest. It must also be an environment where they can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue living their lives with independence and dignity.

Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day by spending some time with senior citizens you know. This can be your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or even neighbours. Let them know they are loved and appreciated. You can even pay your local old age home or retirement village a visit, and alleviate a lonely resident’s existence by sharing your smile and time with those who do not always receive visitors.

If you are a senior citizen, check at your local restaurants or stores for promotions or discounts offered.
