Speed humps for learner’s safety

Speed-calming measures to be implemented

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has put up two speed humps in front of Hoërskool Die Burger, to ensure that learners can cross the road safely.

“A petition calling for calming measures at the intersection of Exhibition Road and 11th Street was lodged with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), following an increase in speeding on this stretch of road, resulting in putting the lives of learners using the pedestrian crossing at risk,” said Bertha Scheepers, JRA spokesperson.

She said that JRA conducted a site visit to measure and observe the behaviour of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the existing road design and road signs. “After completing the site visit, JRA has embarked on the installation of two speed humps along Exhibition Road, 75 to 100 metres on either side of the 11th Street intersection. Level-one road marking and signage maintenance has also been carried out,” she said.

According to her, the project has been undertaken through the city’s Complete Street Capital Budget Allocation and aligns to the city’s Streets Alive Programme, which aims to create safe streets through education, enforcement and engineering.

But, the speed humps were not the only measures taken to ensure the learners’ safety. “We have alerted the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officials to carry out target enforcement of road traffic by-laws in the vicinity to adhere to the traffic-calming measures. To ensure compliance with the City’s petition procedures, campaigns to educate motorists on the importance of adhering to road traffic signage, as well as educating learners on road safety practices, will also be carried out,” she concluded.Do you think the measures taken by JRA will make a difference?
