Silverstar staff collect tops and tags for wheelchairs

Silverstar staff compete to collect the most tops and tags for wheelchairs.

Silverstar has been diligently collecting bottle tops and bread tags for the Sweetheart Foundation.

The Sweetheart Foundation, through the Tops and Tags initiative, raises funds to purchase wheelchairs for the less fortunate in various communities. Staff at Silverstar have been collecting as many bottle tops and bread tags as possible, which will be handed over to the foundation and used to purchase these wheelchairs. In total, 450kg of bottle tops or 50kg of tags are needed in exchange for a standard wheelchair. Initiatives like this help raise awareness about how ordinary citizens can play their part in protecting the environment, whilst doing good for others

The Silverstar Tops and Tags staff project kicked off in June. The various Silverstar departments are competing to see who can collect the most bottle tops and bread tags by the end of each month and fill 70 litre bins. Each department’s container will be weighed and divided by the total number of staff within the team to get an average weight per staff member.

After five weeks, Silverstar staff have collected 186,36kg. The top three departments are Food and Beverage (8,09kg), Tables (8kg) and Cash Desk (6.27kg).

The departments in the lead, based on average lids per employee are Maintenance (485g per employee), Tables (402g per employee) and Surveillance (357g per employee).

They hope to collect 450kg by the end of August.

“The project will inspire some healthy competition and teamwork amongst our staff, in the spirit of doing good for others and our environment.

This recycling project is just one of the various environmental awareness CSI initiatives that we have undertaken to promote and practise good citizenship. It is also encouraging making recycling part of our daily lives, both at work and at home in an ongoing effort that will not end after the environmental awareness month,” said Shane Collinson, director of operations and complex general manager at Silverstar.
