Massive water outage hits parts of Roodepoort

The main pipeline was damaged by n contractor and caused major water outages in parts of Roodepoort.

Councillors in Roodepoort whose wards have been affected by water outages due to a damaged pipe line came out gun blazing last night, 13 August, to demand answers from Johannesburg Water (JW) and the construction company believed to be responsible for the damage.

Taps ran dry in parts of Roodepoort over the weekend following damage a contractor had caused to a main pipeline at the Nedbank site in Constantia Kloof.

Many residents were being inconvenienced as water had to be cut off from the reservoirs to prevent further losses after thousands of litres of water had gone to waste. The water gushed for several hours before the water supply could turned off

Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester, who was in the forefront and demanded an immediate explanation from the technicians, told Roodepoort Northsider that she was made aware of the outage at 12pm on Saturday and reported the matter to JW.

“We learnt that Franki [the construction company] had hit a Rand Water main supply pipe,” Bester said. She added that Rand Water only turned off the supply at 8pm on Saturday.

Repairs could not start immediately as the technicians were waiting for the water to drain completely. Water tanks were placed in affected areas such as at Hillfox Power Centre, the service station on Jim Fouche Road and on Constantia Drive.

Bester explained that at this stage JW is unable to commit itself to estimating a time supply will be restored, but mentioned that it had taken four days to restore supply after a similar incident occurred some time ago.
