‘Tops and Tags’ project raises funds for wheelchairs

Silverstar Casino launches staff project with the Sweetheart Foundation to raise funds for wheelchairs.

The Sweetheart Foundation, through the ‘Tops and Tags’ initiative, raises funds to purchase wheelchairs for the less fortunate in various communities.

The staff at Silverstar Casino will be collecting as many bottle tops and bread tags as possible, and will hand them over to the Foundation to purchase these wheelchairs. In total, 450kg of bottle tops or 50kg of tags are needed in exchange for a standard wheelchair. Initiatives like this help raise awareness about how ordinary citizens can play their part in protecting the environment, whilst doing good for others

The bottle tops and bread tags are taken to local recycling companies by the Sweetheart Foundation. Depending on the recycling company, the foundation is either provided with standard adult wheelchairs or funds which are put towards obtaining specialised wheelchairs, in exchange for the tops and tags.

Thabani Thwala, Human Resources Manager at Silverstar said, “We are excited to have launched this collection drive, where the staff will be collecting their bottle tops and bread tags to assist in raising funds for the Sweetheart Foundation and their cause.” He also added that the project creates additional awareness of the issue of recycling and the fact that these items can be utilised constructively, instead of just landing on a public landfill site.

The staff project will have nine clear 70l bins which will be labelled per department. The various Silverstar departments will then race to see who can collect the most bottle tops and bread tags by the end of each month. Each department’s container will be weighed and divided by the total number of staff within the team to get an average weight per staff member.
