Are you ready to volunteer for Charity Begins with Me?
It is a great feat for the organisation to provide Sunday lunch to about 600 children from various informal settlements in Roodepoort. To do this, they need able hands as well as goods. The founder of Charity Begins with Me, Stephan Ferreira, explained that they are in need of volunteers for the following Sundays:
- 6 August
- 13 August
- 20 August
- 27 August
Volunteers meet in Weltevreden Park at 8.50am on Sunday mornings and then take a 10-minute drive together, into Roodepoort. Children under the age of 18 who wish to volunteer must be accompanied by an adult.
“Upon arrival in Roodepoort, the volunteers are divided into two groups, and while one group packs the lunch bags, the other helps with the activities. We mostly let the children play sports, build puzzles and we read to them, and every now and then we have a movie day or kiddies yoga or even dance competitions,” said Stephan.
Once all the lunch bags are packed, the children are divided into groups according to their age, and volunteers help with handing out lunch. The day usually ends between noon and 1pm.

All volunteers must book by no later than noon on Fridays.
Additionally, the following items are needed each week for the children’s lunches:
Zoom Juice (available at Westpack)
- Apples
- Cheese slices
- Vienna sausages
- Fizzers
Charity Begins with Me has also started handing out take-home ‘Bags of Love’ to the children. These include the following items:
- Soap
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrush
- Face cloth
- Cup-a-Soup
- Marshmallows
- Lemon Creams
- Canned food items
Any donations of the above items would also be appreciated. For more information and to volunteer, SMS or WhatsApp Stephan on 072 593 3866.
