Walter Sisulu Garden saved from sewage

The sewerage leaks, which were responsible for polluting the stream that runs through Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, have been fixed.

The sewerage leak, which caused sewage to run through Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden has been fixed.

Andreas Oberlechner, chairman of the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch, was one of the first people to report the leak. He said more than one leak within both the City of Johannesburg and Mogale City caused the sewage to flow down to the Garden.

Public relations councillor, Lori Coogan, said the main leak within the City of Johannesburg has been fixed. This was also confirmed by Ward 83 councillor, Suzanne Clarke, whose ward covers part of the Garden. Clarke said the leak in Mogale City has also been attended to.

The main leak in the City of Johannesburg was discovered over a month ago when local resident, Jerome West, was out on a photo-walk in the Kloof above the Garden. When he returned to the Kloof on 14 July and saw the leak had not been dealt with, he once again reported it and local authorities sprung to action, having the leaks fixed in the space of a week.

The Botanical Garden is a very important biodiversity area. There is a chance that the endangered Albertina Sisulu Orchid and the Spider Orchid occur in this area. Additionally, a red-listed fish species is also found in the stream that runs through the Garden.
