My Neighbour Street Store brings relief to Ruimsig informal settlement
My Neighbour reaches out to the residents of the Ruimsig informal settlement through a Street Store.
My Neighbour Residents’ Association organised a Street Store for the residents of the Ruimsig informal settlement.
The Street Store, which was situated on Hole in One Avenue on 22 July, comprised donated toiletries and clothes that had been collected over a two-month period. Residents of the settlement were invited to ‘shop’ at the store and pick up some basic necessities and usual household items.

One of the event organisers, Elaine Sutherland, said it was the first time they had attempted such an initiative. They hope to have another one at Christmas and an even greater market around Mandela Day next year.
“My Neighbour is all about caring for others. It has been such a great day bringing happiness into other people’s lives,” she said.
A resident of the Ruimsig informal settlement, Sharon Mhlarhi, said she was very happy to be at the Street Store and have the opportunity to select items for her family.

Each person was able to take two items of clothing and a small item, however, some items did not count, such as toilet paper. The Street Store ran until there were no more items.
