Less fortunate residents benefit from Mandela Day

Local church already plannings for next Mandela Day.

A local church, namely the NG Kerk Weltevreden on Cornelius Street became the centre of attraction when the it hosted its campaign for Mandela Day.The church members spent more than the required 67 minutes donating hand-knitted scarves, beanies and hot soup to the underprivileged in the community on 18 July.

NG Kerk Weltevreden marketing coordinator Tanya Krause helps a community member to pick a scarf.

Tanya Krause, the church’s marketing coordinator, said the church asked its members to knit for Mandela Day.“We asked our members to knit scarves and beanies for us and we received about 206 scarves and 80 beanies which we handed out to the less fortunate members of our community. We also had some blankets, soup and oranges that we also gave away,” she said.

Giving back to the community is not something foreign to the church as this congregation hosts regular food projects for locals.“We didn’t know what to expect, but since we run a food project in the church, we had a few regulars and some new faces at the event,” said Tanya. She also mentioned that the church looks forward to hosting another Mandela Day next year and hopes to find a better way to get the message out to the community.
