Kleynhans said they drove to the mall after church, as his mother wanted to shop around for a jacket.
“We walked in at Entrance 9 and my father and I started horsing around while walking towards Browns Jewellers.”
“Suddenly we saw a bunch of guys, [about] eight, trying to break in at the jewellery shop. There were two guys wrestling each other, one of which I think was a security officer. One of the guys tried to jump the gate at the jewellers when the smoke detectors went off,” Kleynhans explained.
“Suddenly we heard gunshots, and immediately laid low. We ran into Trappers and hid there. The store also locked its doors to protect everyone.”
This regular Clearwater Mall shopper added that a bullet casing was found on the floor of the mall, and one of the neighbouring shops had a cracked window.
