Young motocross racer does it all through discipline

Look out! This young motocross racer is on a fast track to the top.

Agape Christian School learner, Christian Berrington-Smith (7), may be small but he has a huge love for motocross.

He only started motocross at the beginning of this year but has already participated in two different series: the Motorsport South Africa Regional Championship and the World of Motorsport South Africa Northern Regional series.

With every event his progress and results have improved substantially. His first result was fifth place, then fourth place and now third place overall in both series. He posted the fastest lap times in both of his heats at the last race meeting held at Dirt Bronco, which was a combined National and Regional event. All these results are achieved on a 50cc KTM motorcycle which is 7 years older than than the bikes of his rivals.

Christian trains weekly with a private trainer, Jessie Wright, and with his Dad during weekends. He is due to tackle his next MSA race on 29 July in Welkom, at the Phakisa Motorcross Track.

Christian’s mother, Heidi, said he just loves the competition. Everything in their house in Sundowner is a race with his younger sister, Amber. “I think he likes the jumps the most. He gives me a thrill now and again by shaking his butt while up in mid-air in a jump. He knows I love it. We are so proud of his discipline, his school work, of which his maths and art are his favourite subjects, and the training and hard work that goes into motocross.

We love to support him and travel as a family to all his races,” she added.
