Ipid faces challenge in men in JMPD uniform rape scandal
Woman allegedly raped by men in JMPD uniform is still traumatised, said authority.
The two men in JMPD uniform who allegedly raped a woman on 14th Avenue last week may just get away with the crime.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), one of the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, has indicated that they have had difficulty in getting a statement from the victim.
The national spokesman for Ipid, Muzi Dlamini, told the Roodepoort Northsider that they have not been able to interview the victim in order to take the investigation further.
“We are aware of the matter. However, we can’t comment on the merits of the case because we haven’t interviewed the complainant as yet,” Dlamini said.
He added that they need to get the information from the victim for validation.
Dlamini stated that Ipid has been dealing with the family in the meantime because of the victim’s traumatised condition.

The incident happened on 5 July, when the woman was allegedly asked to produce her driver’s licence before being held at gunpoint and forced into a nearby bush where she was raped.
The incident was initially reported at Fairland Police Station before being transferred to Florida Police Station.
No arrests have been made yet.
Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the Metro Police spokesperson, said his department formed part of the investigating team which consists of the Metro Police, Ipid and the police.
“If anyone is stopped on the side of the road by individuals who appear to be bogus police officers, they may drive to the nearest police station for help, or to a filling station where there are lights and cameras.
They are also invited to phone either the police on 10111, or the JMPD on 011 375 5911,” Minnaar said.
He also shed light on how the JMPD operates. “We only use unmarked cars for special operations. Normal patrol duties are conducted by officers who are wearing full Metro Police uniforms, travelling in fully marked Metro Police vehicles,” he explained.
