Mandela Day celebrations at Roodepoort Theatre

Hosted in partnership with Region C Department of Health.

Roodepoort Theatre, in partnership with the Region C Department of Health, Kofifi Media and Alexander’s Harvest Time Foundation will embark on its Mandela Day Celebrations on Saturday, 15 July.

The theatre would like to invite the Roodepoort community to be part of the Mandela Day Celebrations and Family Fun Day that will take place at 10am on its premises at 100 Christian de Wet Road, Florida Park.

The objective of the day’s activities is to show love, and to honour Nelson Mandela’s life work towards changing the world for the better. The Family Fun Day will incorporate wellness centres to which residents from underprivileged backgrounds will be bused, in order to take part in the Wellness testing provided by the Region C Department of Health. Tests for diabetes, cholesterol levels, and HIV will be conducted. Pre- and post counselling for HIV+ individuals will also be offered. In addition, the BMI of participants will be measured.

There will also be a music performance by a mystery artist, and live broadcasts from Kofifi FM and Kofifi Sophia TV. There will be children’s arts and crafts initiatives aimed at offering recreational spaces to the community, to help reduce alienation, loneliness, and anti-social behaviours amongst the youth, ultimately promoting ethnic and cultural harmony. The recreational activities planned for the day are set to build stronger relations among people from different backgrounds and will assist in building the foundation of a stronger society.

The integrated and accessible leisure services that will be provided to the communities of disadvantaged individuals are critical to the quality of life of all people. The locals will be introduced to facilities in their local environment to further encourage community pride.

Community members can get involved by being part of the day’s activities and by offering any form of support through sponsorships for the children’s playtime activities (jumping castles, pony rides, kiddies tables and chairs, painting activities for kids, face painting, cup-cake decorating and gazebos), food, toiletry hampers, busing the disadvantages communities to and from the theatre, additional security and ablution facilities.

Given all the wonderful activities and the many little people expected (up to 300) to be present on the day, the organisers are appealing to the community for donations of fresh fruits and vegetables. “We would appreciate your participation because we know that giving and caring is the basis of Mandela Day and at the heart of the City of Joburg, and because when we work together we can achieve far more than when we work alone.”
