6 July is National Fried Chicken Day, and throughout the world, lovers of this delicacy celebrate it nearby restaurants, at home or by having an outdoor picnic.
The tradition of deep-frying chicken in fat was brought to the southern United States by Scottish immigrants. After its initial introduction, the dish soon became a staple and, over time, seasoning and spices were added to enhance the flavour of the chicken.
Fried chicken is a dish that consists of chicken pieces that have been floured or battered, then pan-fried, deep-fried or pressure-fried. The breading (the batter or flour) adds a crisp coating to the exterior of the chicken.
Traditionally, the chicken is fried in lard; however, corn oil, peanut oil, canola oil and vegetable oil are also frequently used.
Celebrate today by searching for that perfect recipe, make some fried chicken and invite your friends and family over.
