UPDATE: New Spring Road bridge to cost between R45 million and R55 million
Ward 126 councillor, David Brand, explains the process to be followed for constructing the new Spring Road bridge.
Further inspection of the Spring Road Bridge revealed it may take a year to construct the new one at an estimated cost of between R45 million and R55 million.
The bridge was closed in March after its structural integrity could not be guaranteed. It was originally estimated the bridge would remain closed for 10 months.

A consulting engineer has been appointed to plan, design and monitor the construction of the new bridge.
“Unfortunately this is a long and slow process, and it is doubtful that the new bridge will be completed before December 2018,” said David Brand, Ward 126 councillor.
According to Brand, a geotechnical investigation is required first to determine the foundation requirements of the new bridge. Once the design has been completed and approved, tenders can be called for, adjudicated and awarded. The construction period is estimated to be at least 12 months.

Included in the tender will be the requirement to rehabilitate the river banks on either side of the bridge as well as relocating sewer pipes and Telkom service lines.

Once the tender has been awarded, a public meeting will be held to explain the process to be followed. A community liaison officer will be appointed by the selected contractor to engage with residents throughout the construction period.
The bridge is still closed off at Moss Road and just after Netball Street by boulders, old tar drums, danger tape and no entry signs.
