Taxi strike looming

West Rand taxis in limbo over upcoming strike

It is still unclear whether Dorljota (the Dobsonville, Roodepoort, Leratong, Johannesburg Taxi Association) will join the envisaged nationwide taxi strike and affect most of the West Rand.

Taxi consumers have been warned to brave themselves for the crippling action next week Wednesday. This comes after a devastating strike in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town late last month left people stranded and motorists stuck in traffic for hours due to blocked roads.

Santaco said the reason for the previous strike was the development of the taxi industry, sales of vehicles and taxi financing issues as well as escalating vehicle prices and drivers being blacklisted.

The association indicated that if an agreement with the government and private sector is not reached, a nationwide strike will follow.

Dorljota could not be reached for comment.
