National Bikini Day

Celebrate the anniversary of the bikini on #NationalBikiniDay

5 July is National Bikini Day, a day that marks the anniversary of the invention of the revealing two-piece bathing suit.

Since 5 July 1946, women have been hitting the beaches and pool sides in bikinis. The bikini is named after the Bikini Atoll, where the United States conducted atomic tests. The bathing suit made its debut in Paris, and the French designer, Louis Reard wanted to name the revealing bits of fabric atom.

By World War II, sunbathers in the United States were wearing modest two-piece suits, but they hardly revealed the amount of skin the bikini revealed in 1946. The bikini was readily and enthusiastically donned by European women after a long and arduous war, but America’s sense of decency kept them from accepting the bikini until the 1960s.
