Panorama Primary School in Weltevreden Park makes 72 blankets for Mandela Day

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Children learn valuable skills by supporting 67 Blankets for Mandela Day.

Panorama Primary School beat it’s record for last year and donated 72 blankets to the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative.

Teacher, parents and schoolchildren knitted and crocheted their hearts out in a space of three months to be able to hand over the blankets on 29 June.

The children and teachers show off the 72 masterpieces.

Teacher, Carin de Jager, said it was very special to see the time and effort the children put into the blankets, as they knitted during break time or when they finished their work in class.

Each class was asked to donate at least one blanket. With the combined efforts of the teachers and parents, 72 blankets were finished by the second last day of school, a total of 39 more than last year.

Principal, Graeme Moodie; foundation phase head of department, Tracy Fiddes; Grade 1 teacher Rene’ Fourie; and financial manager, Debbie Hance show their appreciation for the blankets made by the schoolchildren and staff members.

Jaco Lötter, personal assistant to founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn, said their contribution and effort was amazing and thanked the school.

De Jager added that making the blankets taught the children the skill of crocheting which they may not have otherwise learnt. “Next year we aim to handover 100 blankets,” De Jager concluded.

Nnoyelum Olisha, Adaugo Enyiaka, and Deon Chipeta hand over blankets to Jaco Lötter.
