Residents urged to register for ESP benefits

MMC calls on the poor to register for benefits

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is currently busy updating its indigent register and urges the unemployed, elderly and people with disabilities to register or re-register to continue receiving ESP benefits that include water, electricity, refuse removal and property rates rebates.

During a recent open day hosted at the Roodepoort City Hall, Mpho Phalatse, the MMC for Health and Social Development, encouraged residents to attend these citywide workshops, to ensure they are informed about the ESP and its benefits.

“Open days and regional community workshops will take place at a number of venues for new registrations, as well as re-registrations.

Normal registration will continue taking place at revenue customer service centres, clinics and public hospitals. The registrations are mandatory for new and existing beneficiaries,” she said.

Residents wanting to apply for ESP benefits, should:

• Be South African citizens

• Live within the City of Johannesburg’s boundaries

• Either be unemployed or earning less than a monthly income of R5 308.20

To apply for the ESP benefits you will need the following documents:

• Proof income (for example a South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) card

• Three months’ bank statements

• Identity Document

• Electricity account/ prepaid electricity card or meter number and a water account

She added that individuals applying for water and electricity benefits did not have to be home-owners or have their names on municipal accounts. “Individuals could further qualify for referral to other initiatives such as skills development, social services, youth programmes as well as homeless intervention programmes that are offered by various other city departments.”

She concluded by saying, “The ESP is renewable every six months.”
