Although the morning started off overcast and cold, fathers and their daughters gathered at The King’s School West Rand for a ‘daddy-daughter picnic’.
It was the second such picnic of the year. All the girls in the school and their fathers are welcome to the event that occurs once a term.

“Some of the older children do not come because they are writing exams, so we have more of the little ones with their fathers here today. Last time the fathers had a list of topics to talk about but this time I’ve organised more activities to do,” said teacher and organiser, Surita Burger about the second daddy-daughter picnic this year.

Once all the families had gathered in the hall, Burger welcomed the dads and thanked them for taking time out to spend with their daughters on 24 June. This picnic was extra special as Burger had organised guest speakers, father and daughter, John Huisamen and Lize-Marie Sandenbergh, who shared the most defining moments in their relationship with the other fathers and daughters.

Their presentation showed how fathers can still play an active role in their daughters’ lives, even when they grow up and move out of the house. Their presentation consisted of a timeline from the present to the past which illustrated how frequent coffee dates, visits at university, supporting hockey games, and showing respect and trust builds a relationship that can withstand life’s changes.

After the presentation, fathers and daughters could create their own timeline of memories, or list of memories they would like to have together, while they picnicked on the school lawns or in the hall.
