Weltevreden Park gets a little greener
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Local Miss Earth semi-finalist donates indigenous trees to Weltevreden Park Primary.
A local Miss Earth South Africa semi-finalist, Timeeka Govender (19), returned to her primary school, Weltevreden Park Primary, to teach children about the importance of trees.
Govender spoke to the Grade 1 to 3 children on 21 June about trees, the role they play and why they should protect trees. She returned on 23 June, and with the help of Princess Groot Bome Kwekery/Nursery, donated 17 indigenous trees to the school. The trees were planted near the school’s bottom field where there were previously no trees.
Principal of Weltevreden Primary School, James van Dyk, said, “Thank you for the beautiful trees and what you are doing for the environment. We really appreciate it.”
Govender, a resident of Radiokop, became involved in the Miss Earth programme as she is passionate about the earth. She decided not to sit back and complain about environmental issues but to make a difference.
Govender takes time out of her studies toward a bachelor of science in bio-medicine to facilitate projects as part of the Miss Earth South Africa programme. She has been involved in recycling, environmental awareness, donating books to underprivileged schools and community cleanups.
One of the best parts of the programme for Govender has been the opportunity to get involved with many different projects and the people she has met along the way.
