Funeral goers fire AK47s in Grobler Park, cops do nothing

Neighbourhood watch pointed out culprits.

Both the West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) and residents in the Grobler Park area are unhappy about the way the police and Metro Police dealt with a potentially dangerous situation that occurred yesterday (25 June).

At about 5.30pm, the WSRNW received complaints about a group driving and walking from South Road down Harry Street. Although they were initially believed to be a small group of protesters, it turned out they were actually part of a funeral procession. What concerned residents was that some of the funeral-goers were firing 9mm pistols into the ground, and when they reached Elm Street, they also fired rounds into the air with AK47s.

The WSRNW then called both the police and Metro Police. When they arrived, the patrollers pointed out the culprits but were told to withdraw from the situation. According to WSRNW spokesperson Frik van Zyl, his patrollers were standing in the veld watching the funeral-goers firing the rifles. They pointed out a red vehicle in which the AK47s had been hidden, and a number of spent cartridges, to the police, yet nothing was done and no arrests were made.

The Record is in the process of obtaining comment from both the police and the Metro Police.
