Lions Clubs live up to their motto

"Thank you to all who donated so generously"

Their saying is, “Where there is a need, there is a Lion.” And the recent tragedy of the Knysna Fires proved just that.

“We sincerely thank all community members who have generously donated towards the Knysna fire victims. The response to our appeal was immediate, and donations of food, blankets, clothes and even money streamed in. The members of all our clubs in the Roodepoort area quickly came together to arrange for collection points, sort through everything, get it packed and ensure that it would be delivered,” said Sandy van Heerden, the Public Relations Officer for the Wilro Lions.

She added that they were overwhelmed with the quick response from the community, after their appeal for help went out. “The District Governor, Bernd Gerhard, wanted to thank all community members, as well as Lions Clubs in our area for their quick response and donations – either financially or otherwise,” she said.

Bernd confirmed that, with the help and support from the community, they managed to collect loads of goods and fell just short of their R100 000 target. “As Lions our motto is simply, ‘We Serve’ and that is exactly what we did. Even though we could not all be on the ground to offer help, the support from each and every person is much appreciated, and you can be confident that your contribution will be much appreciated by those affected,” he said.

Carl van Blerk, the Past District Governeor for Lions Clubs International District 410D also extended his thanks. “To date, we have received many tons of food, clothing and other supplies that was trucked into the region and handed out to aid the victims. But, we have also received large financial contributions that will be used to support the relief efforts. It is said that Lions serve with pride – and the response from clubs around the world, as well as the community who supports them, has certainly proven that the organisation and its members still make a significant impact, and can be proud of their achievements over the last 100 years,” he said.

Sandy concluded by saying, “I am so proud to be a Lion – united we stand!”
