“I want to be a role model”

Varene is a Miss Earth SA Regional Semi Finalist

The 24-year old Varene Wilson wants to be a role model who creates awareness of environmental issues – and she now has the chance to do so.

She is a former West Ridge High School student who resides in Davidsonville, and has been chosen as a Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) regional semi-finalist. “I have always wanted to enter the Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) competition, but never had the courage to do so. I am humbled and privileged to have made it so far in the competition. Being a regional semi-finalist has given me the confidence to use this platform and go out to make a positive difference – not only in my community, but in the lives of my peers as well,” she said.

MESA is a leadership programme aimed at empowering young South African women with the knowledge and the platform needed to create a sustainable difference in the preservation of our natural heritage, and, ultimately that of Mother Earth.

Varene added that MESA carries out tree-planting projects that all the semi-finalists take part in, in various communities. “I have planted 10 trees at Bosmont Primary School and taught them the importance of trees and the preservation thereof. I have also done educational talks and recycling activities with Horizon View Primary School’s Grade 3 learners,” she said.

She will also be hosting a community clean-up in Davidsonville on 24 June, and urges everyone to join them.

She added that this competition gives girls and women of all ages the opportunity and the platform to make a difference. “By entering this competition, I am able to give back to my community, which is ultimately my goal. I strive to make a difference in the lives of others and would like to be a role model who creates awareness of environmental issues,” Varene said.

The competition has made a big difference in her life, and she concluded by saying, “I have learned a tremendous amount about myself on this journey and am now – more than ever – aware of the environmental issues we are facing. But I also know that, together, we can make a difference.”
