Fifty-seven Scout groups took part in the 2017 Gauteng Kontiki Scout Event, and the 1st Eagle Scouts from Witpoortjie walked off as the winners.
Kontiki has grown to become South Africa’s largest annual scouting event, with some 3 000 scouts from 57 Scout groups participating this year.
The main part of the event involves each team building a raft with ropes, poles and barrels. The raft must have a weatherproof shelter, and once completed, the team is required to stay on the water for a full 24 hours.
The raft crew consisted of Kyle Hummerstone, Kyle Bevan, Aiden Finlay, Eric Hayes, Kyle Lake, Amber-Jayde Williams, Josh Hershensohn and Tammi Esterhuizen.
There is also a land-based element to the event, with each team, made up of members of the group who remain on land, required to build a campsite, and participate in a cooking competition and various other activities.
The competition puts their most of their scouting skills to test as well requiring leadership, teamwork and perseverance in order to succeed.
The land crew consisted of Chantell Chapple, Ethan Finlay, Luke Esterhuizen, Thabang Ledwaba, Zoe Hayes, Philip Obermeyer, Jordan Torrani and Conrad Wagenaar.
