Emma O’Brien is a portrait photographer who has decided to put her passion to good use. She is planning to self-publish a book that will tell a story about rescued dogs. According to Emma, over 500 mixed-breed dogs are euthanised because there are not enough people willing to adopt them.

“Mixed-breed dogs are often overlooked by potential adoptees in favour of pedigree or purebred dogs, and that is something I would like to change,” said Emma.
The book, entitled Mutts is a collection of portraits of rescued dogs and their individual stories. All the dogs featured in the book were either unwanted as puppies or older dogs, and they’ve now found their way into loving homes
This project is Emma’s way of showcasing the uniqueness of mixed-breed rescued dogs.

“There are some really interesting-looking dogs in this project. By putting their images together with stories about their characters and personalities, I can tell the public what excellent companions rescued dogs make and how much fun and joy they bring.”
By publishing the book, Emma aims to reach a wider audience and inspire people to get their next dog from an animal shelter.
“It is also a chance for these underdogs to have their moment in the spotlight. In the book you’ll find stories of love, bravery and forgiveness.”

Emma is planning to release the book in mid-September. It will then be available to buy online as well as in book shops. She needs to raise R125 000 to print 500 books.
“It’s going to be a community effort to produce these books, so please donate. You can send the link below to family and friends and post on Facebook. All of this will be a big help,” said Emma.
The proceeds from the book will be split between the Sandton SPCA and Claw.
