Help charities provide lunches to children of Durban Deep in Roodepoort

ROODEPOORT – Charity Begins with Me and Claw need your help to feed 400 children.

A total of 400 children from Durban Deep, a township in Roodepoort, received Sunday lunches thanks to Charity Begins with Me and Community Led Animal Welfare.

The initiative started in February and volunteers have been packing and distributing lunches to children on Sundays ever since. The number of children has grown to 400 and continues to grow week by week.

Founder of Charity Begins with Me, Stephan Ferreira explained, “Every Sunday, the children arrive from just after 9am and we do various activities with them from reading to drawing and we even had a sports day for the boys and a spa day for the girls on 28 May.”

The welfare provides veterinary services to dogs and cats in Roodepoort, as well as vital animal care education to pet owners in Johannesburg’s poorest township areas.

Children who receive lunches, in turn, also play a vital role in reporting animal abuse in the community and will often take stray or injured dogs to the local clinic.

Children are given apples, hot dogs, juice and much more in their lunch packs.

Each child receives a brown paper bag with apples, juice, a yoghurt or slice of cheese, biscuits, chips, a Fizzer and a muffin or hot dog.

On a weekly basis, Charity Begins with Me needs the following to feed the children:

  • Apples
  • Cheese slices
  • Zoom juice boxes
  • Fizzers
  • Viennas
  • Muffin mix.
