Updated information on this morning’s robbery

A more accurate version of this morning’s (31 May) armed robbery on Leerdam Street has surfaced.

According to one of the victim’s daughters the two suspects climbed over the back wall of the premises at about 8am and entered through the back door. Two sisters, 73- and 86-years-old respectively, as well as their 21-year-old grandson were at home. The young man, who lives in a flatlet, heard the commotion and ran into the house and found that the 73-year-old woman had been assaulted with a pickaxe. They then assaulted him with a spade.

The woman was taken to hospital by QRS Emergency Services.

Although details are still sketchy, an elderly woman was allegedly badly assaulted during an armed robbery on the corner of Fort Avenue and Leerdam Street in Witpoortjie.

The incident took place earlier this morning (31 May) between 7am and 8am. Two armed men entered the premises through the palisade fence and managed to gain entry to the house. When they were confronted by an elderly woman they allegedly hit her in the face with a hammer.

The suspects started ransacking the house but lost their nerve and fled without taking anything. The woman phoned a family member – a Metro Police employee – who dispatched five vehicles to the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital by QRS Emergency Services.
