Illegal mining operation a resounding success

Operation focused on Matholesville.

According to the Roodepoort Police station commander, Brigadier Manala, a recent raid on an illegal mining operation yielded fruit.

The operation started at midnight on 24 May and continued throughout the night. Various police units were involved, including the K9 squad, Tactical Response Unit, Gauteng Flying Squad, Cluster Team, Community Safety and Roodepoort Police members.

The operation focused on Matholesville, where sixteen illegal immigrants were arrested, and one suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.

In the same area, a suspect was arrested for possession of a motor vehicle that was stolen in Boksburg, and another for possession of dagga.

During the search of the shacks, illegal mining equipment, such as gas bottles, hose-pipes, spades, a cutting torch, 60 litres of gold concentrate, hammers, a drill, crushing balls, crusher pots and steel balls were confiscated.

Illegal shebeens were also closed down and 5 971 litres of liquor were confiscated.
