Local residents to take a stand against rape and murder of women and children

ROODEPOORT – Call for action against rape and murder of women and children this Saturday on corner of Albert Street and Hendrik Potgieter Road.

Following a major outcry in the country about the increase of rape and murder of women, local residents have organised a peaceful protest against the scourge on 27 May.

A local activist Helen McDonald said the protest would take place at 10am on the corner of Abert Street and Hendrik Potgieter Road.

McDonald was the organiser of the #ZumaMustFall protest on Hendrik Potgieter Road which saw close to a 100 people take a stand against President Jacob Zuma in April.

The latest protest call comes shortly after a local school was put into the spotlight after a sexual assault scandal emerged at the place of learning and the death of model Karabo Mokoena who was allegedly killed and burnt by her Sandton boyfriend. The demonstration will also be in memory of Brenda Ruvando who was raped and murdered last year during the Easter period on the corner of Cascades and Hendrik Potgieter roads.

“The peaceful protest is against the rape and murder of women and children. This is totally out of hand. And we also are taking a stand against farm murders as well,” she said.

She added that she expected at least 50 to 100 people to join the protest and has invited biking clubs to take part.
