First River Race of Season

Canoe season kicks off

Local paddlers Emile Theunissen and John Wernick participated in the Watuni Canoe Club in Vanderbijlpark during the weekend of 6 May. The event was hosted at the Akzonobel River Race as the first race of the new river season, which began on 1 April.

The river season peaks at the end of March, with the best racing period being December, when the rainy season ensures rivers are pumping huge amounts of water and the rapids are challenging and exciting.

Gauteng Canoe Unions Jennie Dallas said the in winter, the river water levels are lower, sluggish and the rapids manageable, “so they are ideal for learner paddlers to get up and running, gaining skill, ability and making mistakes under easier situations.”

The race started in Henley-on-Klip at The Makery event venue and finished in Meyerton – a distance of 20km, with numerous rapids and obstacles to overcome.

Emile and John finished in 10th position, crossing the finishing in a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes.
