The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the police began removing the illegal land invaders after a court order was finally granted. “There are lots of people that are not happy with the evictions, but according to law, they are not allowed to be there,” said Caleb Finn, the councillor for Ward 70.

The shacks that were being removed belong to the group of people who illegally erected shacks on the council-owned land on 5 May. According to a business owner, one of the persons claimed that he bought a stand for R75.

Although the situation is calm at the moment and Albertina Sisulu Road (Main Reef Road) is not closed to traffic, motorists are urged to be vigilant when driving there, as the situation could change at any moment.
