Soap Box Derby cancelled

Derby cancelled

The much anticipated return of the iconic Soap Box Derby has been shelved. The event which was historically held at the M.O.T.H. Shellhole next to Florida Lake was scheduled for 12 May. Roodepoort Lions Club was behind the initiative to see the return of this event. Lions Club fundraising chairperson Ivor said the event was cancelled due to their inability to secure the number of significant sponsors required to stage it.

“We felt this would be an iconic event and a great project for the West Rand. It would put us back on the map and bring the community together again. The club has however decided that the money collected from the public for service would be better spent on community service in this economic climate rather than on a project such as this. We have therefore reluctantly put it on hold for this year and may consider it again next year if things improve. We wish to thank all those people and companies who have offered the venue, sponsorship and participation.”

The Soap Box Derby was part of the Roodepoort calendar for decades, but was stopped in the 1980s due to increased traffic, the development of the area and meeting the increasingly difficult requirements of health and safety.
