Truck and bakkie collide, one person critical
Man in critical condition after two-vehicle collision.
A man is in critical condition after the Jaws of Life had to be used extricate him from the wreckage of his bakkie after a collision at the intersection of Christiaan De Wet and Ontdekkers Roads in Florida. According to reports from the scene, a one-ton truck loaded with furniture and four people on the back crashed into the back of a bakkie with two occupants.

The emergency services arrived at the scene and found that the driver of the truck had sustained critical injuries, and was still trapped in the twisted frame of the vehicle. The passengers from the truck and the occupants from the bakkie escaped uninjured.
The Netcare 911 rescue officer and firemen from the City of Johannesburg worked hand-in-hand, using the Jaws of Life to extricate the injured man. Paramedics clambered into the wreckage while the extrication was underway, to stabilise the man and to ensure his safety during the procedure.

The patient was immobilised on a spinal board before medics removed him from the wreckage. This is done as a precaution, as there is a strong possibility that the patient sustained spinal injuries that can be aggravated by any wrong movement.
The condition of the patient deteriorated and the Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support paramedics had to perform specialised procedures to save his life. The patient was transported to hospital under the constant care and monitoring of the Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support paramedic.
